Elles

Sex please - ★★ Men take note – you are all sexist pigs addicted to pornography simply seeing women as whores. Or at least that’s according to Malgorzata Szumowska’s new film Elles. Juliette Binoche is Anne, a journalist who is writing a piece about student prostitutes for the French magazine “Elle”. The film takes place over one day as Binoche puts together the article, with her interviews with the two students Charlotte (Anais Demoustier) and... Read More

Moonrise Kingdom is hipster heaven

Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom re-cast as High School hipsters New York Magazine’s illustrators have been hard at work on re-imaging Summer Movie Casts as High School Cliques. Pick of the bunch is without doubt their rendering of Wes Anderson’s upcoming Moonrise Kingdom, a film we’re very excited about here at Spooool. Moonrise Kingdom as … The Hipsters That sound you hear — 1960s folk rock — is definitely coming from the Moonrise Kingdomtable,... Read More

Marley

Marley and Friends - ★★★ Marley touches it all, the highs, lows, affairs, assassination attempts and a search for identity making it a jam and a half. Helicopter shots of Nine Mile (no connection to 8 mile) in St. Ann Parish Jamaica shows us the insanely scenic birth place of the Godfather of Reggae; Robert Nesta Marley. His childhood wasn’t exactly idyllic, as the child of mixed race parents he was an easy target for bullies. This only made him work harder to be noticed... Read More

The Cabin in the Woods

Scooby Doo, where are you? - ★★★ If you go down to the woods today you’re sure of a big surprise and it ain’t no teddy bear picnic. Much debate has arisen from the release of The Cabin in the Woods more so to do with the nature of trailers and if they give away too much, a subject we’ve touched on before. It’s an age old dilemma when it comes to marketing a movie, do you relay very little to the public hoping they will be intrigued enough to part... Read More

Lockout

Preposterous Pearce - ★★½ Just after the production and studio logos show up, Lockout gives us two on-screen credits. Based on an original idea by Luc Besson. Washington D.C. – 2079 Now then, if either of those grossly offend you, then it’s probably best you stop reading now. Read More  Read More

This is not a movie and this is not a film – A tale of two titles

| o | - Title confusion alert A quick thought. Did the marketeers of these two releases with similarly beguiling titles – This Is Not a Movie (pictured above on the left) and This Is Not a Film (right) - sit down and plan this dual-assault that sees them both showing up on our radar at the same time? Cannes 2012′s leaked line-up V the real list

So earlier this morning the Cannes Film Festival artistic director Thierry Fremaux announced the slate of films that are showing at this year’s festival. You’ll find the lists and a nice analysis from the LA Times here. Personally I’m most excited to see Killing me Softly in there, the film sees Brad Pitt reuniting with Andrew Dominik who worked with him on the criminally under-rated Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.  Read More  Read More

Nice work on the chin Anto

Fox Searchlight have posted this rather bizarre shot of Sir Anthony Hopkins as Sir Alfred Hitchcock. I dolled it up to make it look old to hide the low-res nature of the shot. Kudos to the make-up people and fat-chin sculptors, but it’s all going to come down to how he waddles and tackles that London accent. “Dahn the Eust Und guvnah an’ awl tha”. Read More  Read More

Headhunters (Hodejegerne)

Headscratcher - ★★★★ This Norwegian film will have you wondering if it’s a black comedy, thriller, action film or heist movie. In reality it’s a love story. Rodger Brown played by the oddly Christopher Walken look-a-like Aksel Hennie is short, married to a beautiful blond, works in recruitment and in his spare time is an art thief. He has the best of everything and his main motivation in life is to keep his wife happy for fear of losing her. In order to support... Read More

Blackthorn

The nostalgia will probably kill you - ★★★ Suppose Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid never got shot in that gun fight in Bolivia? Suppose your aunt had balls, well then she’d be your uncle. Supposing don’t make it so, but supposing is what Blackthorn is all about. Sam Shepard plays James Blackthorn – Robert LeRoy Parker to his mother and Butch Cassidy to the law. Luckily for him he wasn’t shot dead and has escaped to the hills of Bolivia to live... Read More

My Best Friend’s Birthday

A Star is Born - ★★★ Early signs of the great director’s talents are easily visible in the 34 surviving minutes of Tarantino’s first film. Now here at Spoool we aren’t going to start reviewing shorts but when it came to light that Quentin Tarantino’s first directorial outing  My Best Friend’s Birthday was available on the interweb (and embedded at the bottom of this review), we had to give it a perusal. Tucker and Dale vs Evil

Bloody Funny - ★★★ Tucker and Dale vs Evil missed out on an Irish cinema release date last year, but now it’s available for all to watch on DVD and it’ll rip your funny bone out. Tucker and Dale are two shoddily dressed soft-headed hillbillies who want nothing more than to kick back and enjoy a few beers in Tucker’s new cabin. Unbeknownst to them, the cabin in the woods is where a series of gruesome murders were carried out back in the 1970s. Add to this... Read More
